Outdoor Programs for Seniors

Outdoor Programs for Seniors engages adults 55+ in outdoor activities to promote the health benefits of being active in nature. Burlington Recreation and Parks provides experienced guides and a diverse program offering. All participants must have a medical clearance and liability waiver & release completed for the current year before participating. Upcoming Events



For all hikes sturdy, closed-toed walking shoes and water are required. Trekking poles are highly recommended. Other recommended items include insect repellent, hat, sun protection, and small backpack to easily carry belonging.

Hike: Haw River Trail
March 3 from 2:00-4:00 pm
Free

Meet at Great Bend Park – 350 Greenwood Dr. Burlington. Hike about 2 miles along the Haw River Trail on rolling, natural surface trail. Register by 3/2. Optional transportation from Senior Center available for $2 – van leaves at 1:20 pm. Pay day of hike.

Hike: Northeast Park 
March 10 from 2:00-4:00 pm
Free

Meet in the Equestrian/Trailer parking area at Northeast Park – 3441 Northeast Park Dr. Gibsonville. Hike 3 miles on rolling natural surface trails. Register by 3/6. Optional transportation from Senior Center available for $2 – van leaves at 1:15 pm. Pay day of hike.

CANCELLED: Day Trip: Weymouth Woods State Park 
March 18 from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm
Fee: $15 (plus money for lunch)

Meet at Meet at the Kernodle Senior Center – 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington. Transportation provided. Have an early lunch in Southern Pines before exploring Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve. Be sure to bring your State Park passport to get a stamp! Hike 3-4 miles through long leaf pine, bogs and hardwood forest. Register and pay by 3/10. PREREQUISTE: 3 SOAR hikes since 1/1/20.

CANCELLED: Hike: Guilford Mackintosh Park
March 24 from 9:00-11:00 am

Meet at Guilford Mackintosh Park & Marina - 1345 NC HWY 61 Whitsett. Park at the end of the road in the circular parking area and meet at the trail head. Hike is 3 miles on natural surface, rolling terrain with a few steep hills. Register by 3/20.

CANCELLED: Intro to Archery
March 26 from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm
Fee: $5

Meet at the Clubhouse at Mackintosh Marina (temporary indoor archery range) - 2704 Huffman Mill Road, Burlington. This is a beginner course featuring an intro to archery, safety on the range, 11 steps to archery success and a proper shot. Space is limited. Register & pay by 3/19.

CANCELLED: Hike: Guilford County Farm 
March 30 from 9:30 am – 12:00 pm

Meet at Guilford County Farm - 7315 Howerton Rd, Elon. Hike over rolling terrain through farm fields, wooded trails and along a creek on this long 4 mile hike. Register by 3/26. Optional transportation from the Kernodle Senior Center available for $2 – van leaves at 8:50 am. Pay day of hike. PREREQUISITE: 3 SOAR hikes since 1/1/20.

April 7 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Meet at Saxapahaw Island Park – 5550 Church Rd. Graham. Hike the 1.5 mile loop twice for a total of 3 miles. The trail is mostly flat and sandy. Register by 4/3. Stay for lunch at the General Store after the hike. Optional transportation from Senior Center available for $2 – van leaves at 10:15 am. Pay day of hike.

CANCELLED: Hike: Haw River Trail

Meet at the Glencoe Paddle Access – 2348 Glencoe St. Burlington. Please car pool if possible - the parking lot is small. The hike is out and back on the Haw River Trail with a total distance of 2 miles. Register by 4/21.

CANCELLED: Hike: Nat Greene Trail
April 22 from 12:30-5:00 pm
Fee: $5

Meet at Meet at the Kernodle Senior Center – 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington. Transportation provided. Hike the 3 miles (total) on an out-and-back section of the Nat Greene Trail which follows the shoreline of Lake Brandt. Expect rolling, natural surface trail. Register and pay by 3/24. PREREQUISTE: 3 SOAR hikes since 2/15/20.

CANCELLED: Day Trip: Hike & Wine in the Blue Ridge
April 28 from 7:30 am – 6:00 pm
Fee: $20

Meet at Meet at the Kernodle Senior Center – 1535 S. Mebane St. Burlington. Transportation provided. Hike 4 moderate/strenuous miles at Rocky Knob Recreation Area with sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Bring a sack lunch to eat after the hike. After lunch relax at Chateau Morrisette with an optional wine tasting ($10). On the way home stop by iconic Mabry Mill. Trekking pole required. Register and pay by 4/20. Rain date 5/6. PREREQUISITE: 3 hikes since 2/15/20.
