Police administration is comprised of a chief of police and two assistant chiefs. The chief of police is the chief executive officer for the agency. The assistant chief of operations commands the Operations Bureau, including all uniformed services. The assistant chief of support commands the Support Bureau, which includes Professional Standards and Internal Affairs. There are other support members within administration, the administrative assistant performs support and logistic functions to the chief of police and other administrative staff; a captain in the Professional Standards Division oversees the budget process. The Burlington Police Department's Communications Center handles incoming emergency and non-emergency calls that they receive. All personnel go through a training process to make sure they have the skills needed to handle the various situations they receive. Remember, if you have an emergency dial 911, but if your issue is not an emergency you can contact our non-emergency line at (336) 229-3500.
This team was recently established to deal with a rising crime trend by establishing community relationships and partnerships to develop trust between the department and the community. This team is strategically place throughout the city to work within communities.
This division is responsible for the BPD's presence in the community. They organize events like our Community Academies and National Night Out, which are designed to build trust in the department and transparency with the community. They coordinate tours of the department and oversee the Community Engagement Team.
This unit develops and analyzes data from our community to discover crime patterns or hot spots in the area so our policing can be strategic and efficient. They work with every division and unit to provide them with up accurate data that allows for better patrolling and investigations.
This division investigates cases that have been generated by Patrol. They have three sub-units, SVU, Gangs, and Person/ Property, that are used to investigate those specific types of crimes. Detectives within those units have specialized experience and training in investigation those types of crimes. Also part of this division is the Victims/Witness Assistance team. They work with victims and witnesses to help them through the court process or provide them with other resources they may need.
Our K-9 unit is utilized for tracking and drug investigation purposes. They are often called on to aid in the search for a missing person or to examine a vehicle for drugs. They attend multiples and are certified by the United States K-9 Association.
This unit is the officers who are most seen in the community. They are the ones who initially respond to a call that comes into the Communication Center. They will respond to the situation and act accordingly to the needs of the situation. They will generate a report, which will later be reviewed by CID to determine if further action is needed.
The Records Section maintains all records generated by the department. They provide accident and incident reports to the public as well as staff the service desk. They also provide fingerprinting services for applications.
These officers are stationed in several of the public schools within our community. Their job is to build relationships with the students and be a resource to the school. They also teach the D.A.R.E. anti-drug program.
